WATERLOO Hospitals across the Waterloo-Wellington region are working on a plan to resume non-emergent, same-day surgeries after getting the all-clear from the province to gradually recommence elective procedures. On Wednesday, the Ontario government rescinded its directive issued on April 20 for hospitals to cease all non-essential and elective services. Lee Fairclough, the Regional Hospital Lead for COVID Response, says hospitals anticipate resuming eligible procedures as soon as feasible. “We know the worry people are experiencing as they are waiting for surgeries,” Fairclough said in a statement. “We will be working together as a region to formulate a plan that balances resumption of these services with the care pressures of the third wave of COVID-19.”
KITCHENER With admissions to Ontario s critical care units levelling out, local hospitals say it looks like they’ll be able to steer clear of ‘last resort’ triage protocols for the time being. As a clinician, it is a worrisome place to be in when you’re deciding who gets an acute care or critical care bed, said Dr. Asim Masood, the chief of staff at Cambridge Memorial Hospital. Triage protocol forces doctors to pick who gets life-saving care and who doesn’t. measures that local hospitals say they’ll be able to avoid as the province continues to see positive trends in the fight against COVID-19.
KITCHENER A doctor who practices in the GTA and Waterloo Region said he supports a directive from the province moving chronically ill hospital patients into long-term care homes to free up space. Moves can be made without patient consent, provincial health officials announced Wednesday. A doctor needs to agree the patient s medical needs can be met in a long-term care or retirement setting. Dr. Asim Masood, the chief of staff at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, said he s seen the growing need to free up beds for patients with COVID-19. This directive supports the use of our beds more appropriately for the sicker, acute patients, Dr. Masood said. It is a welcomed relief.
