EU Magistrate Slams Poland Over Changes to Top Court

In its latest reprimand against the country, a magistrate for Europe’s top court says Poland broke the law by establishing special chambers in the Supreme Court to handle judges’ complaints. Monday’s decision by the court’s Chamber of Extraordinary Control and Public Rights ends a protracted legal battle by the family of Blanka Goldman to regain ownership of the land, which was sold illegally to the Our Lady of the Scapular church in the town of Tarnow. The Poetschke family, who was not Jewish, hid Blanka from the German occupation forces during the Holocaust, the Gazeta Wyborcza paper reported. She was the only member of her family who survived.

The court’s Chamber of Extraordinary Control and Public Rights on Monday upheld a six-year-old ruling in favor of Ann Drillich, who has been battling Polish religious authorities for years. Drillich’s family had lived in Tarnow for centuries until the Nazi occupation forced them to leave to a ghetto, where they all died. However, Ann’s mother Blanka managed to hide with the neighboring Poetschke family for the duration of the war. Family scion Jerzy Poetschke was later honored as one of the Righteous Among the Nations.
