A novel way to pinpoint and illuminate bone damage promises to make X-rays more efficient at diagnosing bone and other injuries, Flinders University researchers say.
The new technique, looking at potential biomedical applications of an ancient inorganic salt-based aggregation induced emission (AIE) radio-luminescence material, could open new frontiers in medicine including X-ray dosimetry, bioimaging and advanced applications such as optogenetics, says Professor Youhong Tang, from Flinders University’s College of Science and Engineering.
The research article, published by Professor Tang, postdoctoral researcher Dr Javad Tavokoli, colleagues in Hong Kong and Australian technology company Micro-X and, examined the potential of the AIEgen luminogens (AIEgens) in deep tissue imaging. The study used X-ray testing provided by Micro-X, a company based at the Tonsley Innovation District in Adelaide.

Rock art of human figures created over thousands of years in Arnhem Land has been put through a transformative machine learning study to analyse style changes over the years.
The study – just published in Australian Archaeology – has tested different styles labelled ‘Northern Running figures’, ‘Dynamic figures’, ‘Post Dynamic figures’ and ‘Simple figures with Boomerangs’ to understand how these styles relate to one another.

More buses and express services for northern commuters
Extra express bus services have been added to the timetable for commuters traveling between Gawler and the city to provide increased frequency and reduce travel time.
From late April, two express services from Gawler to Adelaide will operate in the AM peak period while three express services will operate between Adelaide and Salisbury during the AM and PM peak travel periods.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Corey Wingard, said the additional services will be in place until the Gawler Rail Electrification Project, which is supporting around 535 jobs, is complete at the end of the year.

Hard to find good help for child sleep issues
From newborn babies to restless teenagers, Australians may find it difficult to get expert advice and professional support for sleep problems in children and adolescents.
Ahead of World Sleep Day (19 March 2021) a new paper in Sleep Medicine led by University of Western Australia and Flinders University sleep researchers found a serious shortfall in health professionals’ knowledge, understanding and skills to identify manage and prevent paediatric sleep disorders.
“While the focus of this study was on health professionals, it shows that the public need to be more aware about the quality training in sleep that their health professionals have received,” says senior author Flinders Professor Michael Gradisar, director of the Child and Adolescent Sleep Clinic at Flinders University.
