It’s tamale season. And nowhere is the holiday tradition more beloved here than along the border. But this Christmas COVID is impacting who makes tamales and how people get them. KTEP’s Angela Kocherga has the story.
EL PASO The phone is ringing off the hook and people are lined up outside of Bowie Bakery in West El Paso. The shop is only allowing three customers inside at time as a COVID-19 precaution. With Christmas around the corner, the bakery is even busier than usual this holiday season.
“So we’re buying red tamales for the office. We figured we’d spread some holiday cheer for our 14 employees,” Fred Lopez said as he was paying for his order.
UK authorities had to put southeast England in a hard quarantine over the weekend after discovering a new, more infectious strain of coronavirus spreading through the population.
LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine Professor Dr. Fred Lopez said with the vaccine rollout underway it’s vital those in the area be tested rigorously.
“It’s important to see people who have been vaccinated there to find out if their antibodies are developing against the new strain,” said Lopez.
Other concerns include fears that current diagnostic tests and antibody treatments may not be as effective against this new strain.
Lopez warned it is quite possible this new strain could cross the Atlantic and begin plaguing the US. For example, the pandemic may have begun in China, but most of the strains that washed over America came from Europe.

Today the FDA is expected to vote on emergency approval for the Pfizer COVID vaccine and next week they will vote on the Moderna vaccine. LSU Health New Orleans Infectious Disease Expert Dr. Fred Lopez said this is good news considering we are seeing a spike in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.
“But the fact that we have two vaccines, which look so effective, up to 95% effectiveness, in fact, is really encouraging,” said Lopez.
With two COVID vaccine options on the cusp of being approved when asked which one you should take Dr. Lopez said to take the first one that is offered to you.
