The Sister Islands have been placed under a tropical storm alert Thursday night based on the current track of Tropical Storm Elsa, Hazard Management Cayman Islands has said. Deputy Governor Franz Manderson, who is the Chairman of the National Hazard Management Council issued the tropical Storm Alert as of 6 pm, based on the advice from the Director General of the Cayman Islands National Weather Service and the Director of Hazard Management Cayman Islands, an HMCI statement said.

Travellers from the US and businessowners in the local hospitality industry are querying the rationale behind Cayman making the five-day quarantine option available only to those vaccinated locally or in the UK, when vaccine certificates from other countries are accepted for the 10-day quarantine. Chief Medical Officer Dr. John Lee has said that, currently, only those with Cayman Health Services Authority vaccination cards and people who can show their vaccination information on the UK’s National Health Services app can avail of the five-day quarantine. This is because these are the only certificates the Cayman authorities feel they can safely verify, amid concerns over fake documentation.

Cayman Island Coast Guard Recruits Commence Training 12 January 2021, 04:58 AM Police/Court The Cayman Islands Coast Guard has commenced a historic training programme for its first class of recruits. After a rigorous summer recruitment drive which began in July 2020 and saw over 300 applications from Caymanians across all three islands, 16 recruits were selected to undergo training to become the Caymans Islands’ first Coast Guard (CICG) Recruits. The class of 16 Caymanians, six of whom are female, will undergo a series of intense training sessions over a period of eight weeks. The overall programme is comprised of academic, physical and water-based training to equip recruits with the necessary engineering tools, maritime law enforcement training and search and rescue skills. Throughout this process, the recruits will be evaluated based on sustainability and skills.
