VISION: A map of a possible future fast rail network in the southeast. The project was being driven by a corporate consortium of Stockland, KPMG, Urbis and Smec, and backed by a group of Queensland MPs including Member for Fairfax Ted O Brien. It was initially pitched as a plan to deliver fast rail services to Nambour and Maroochydore to Brisbane, with a connection to Nambour in five years and Maroochydore in 10 years. It was envisaged a possible 2032 Olympic bid could fast-track federal and state investment in the project, which was seen as a critical element of the SEQ Council of Mayors vision for a fast rail-connected southeast, with links from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Toowoomba.

Subscriber only Travellers from major cities could be flying to the Sunshine Coast for half the price as part of the federal government s $2bn tourism support package. The federal government is expected to release the details of the package on Thursday morning. The
Daily understands the package would include half-price return tickets from Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide to the Coast from April 1 to July 31. The offer is as part of a national package including 800,000 cheap airfares to 13 regions. Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O Brien welcomed the package after Coast businesses felt the pain of COVID-19. This new scheme means more Australian tourists coming into the Coast, which translates into more money for local operators and more jobs for retailers, accommodation providers and tourism facilities, he said.
