The good old days at the YWCA

The YWCA was the place to be in the old days. There were relaxing coffee times and just socializing with friends in the big room. Among the friends whom we think of enjoying coffee and fellowship in those days are Lee Crotinger, Louise Spray, Elaine Trauger, Anne Voelker, Barbara Becker, Rose Weaver, Cande Seay, Kathleen Stephens, Colleen Black and Becky Rushton.
There were so many different programs that were available for one to enjoy. One popular program was the tour of local gardens. The Garden Tour Committee would select about four gardens and the owners would work on them to make them appealing to the public. On the tour day there would also be a luncheon. Several members helped with the preparations for the luncheon, and I remember Susie Ferguson having her husband, Rob, help with the decoration of the lunch boxes. It was a wonderful time touring the luxurious gardens and later enjoying the festive lunch.

The year 2021 marks 10 years since the ReNewed Hope Food Pantry first began in a small closet at the New Haven Seventh-day Adventist Church in Overland Park, Kansas, United States.
Volunteers recently gathered at the Eagles Landing for dinner and praise music to mark this milestone. They praised God for bringing food and volunteers to serve the community over these many years.
In the first months, the pantry served about five families a week, Faye Martin recalls. Martin founded the pantry along with local pastor Chanda Nunes in January 2011. The pantry has grown a lot since then, she said, and this past year has been especially pivotal. “I believe God put it in our hearts to start the pantry so many years ago because He knew it would grow and be able to help people during this pandemic,” Martin explained.

Heroes are not just found in history books. In fact, we have one who resides right here in Bulloch County. Meek, unassuming, unselfish, intelligent Glennera Martin is this week’s unsung hero.
Her father. Eugene Martin Sr., served our country, worked at Fort Stewart’s commissary and was a self-employed realtor while her mother, Laura Bell Martin was a highly respected teacher, humanitarian, and the school system’s first African-American social worker. Her parents supported their daughter with love, guidance, and instilled within her a true desire to help others, coupled with a tenacity for learning and teaching.
