Japanese technology firm Eco Marine Power (EMP) has obtained Approval in Principle (AiP) from classification society ClassNK for its Renewable Energy System for vessels.
The system, Aquarius Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) with EnergySail, includes rigid sails, marine-grade solar panels, energy storage modules, marine computers and a charging system.
Eco Marine Power Receives Approval in Principle for Renewable Energy System for Ships
In a significant step towards the realization of a zero-emission power and propulsion solution for shipping, Eco Marine Power is pleased to announced that it has recently received Approval in Principle (AiP) from ClassNK of Japan (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai) for its Renewable Energy System for Ships – “Aquarius Marine Renewable Energy with EnergySail”.
Aquarius Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) is an advanced integrated system of rigid sails, marine-grade solar panels, energy storage modules, charging system and marine computers that enables ships to tap into renewable energy by harnessing the power provided by the wind and sun. The array of rigid sails are automatically positioned by a computer system to best suit the prevailing weather conditions and can be lowered and stored when not in use or during bad weather.

Eco Marine, F-WAVE team up on ship integrated photovoltaic project May 17, 2021, by Fatima Bahtić
Japan-based technology company Eco Marine Power (EMP) announced that it has begun its joint development program with F-WAVE Company (F-WAVE) on new ship integrated photovoltaic (SIPV) solutions.
As informed, EMP’s Aquarius Marine Solar Power solution will incorporate F-WAVE’s flexible PV panel technology and a customised version will also be fitted to EMP’s patented EnergySail for evaluation at the Onomichi Marine Technology Test Centre (MTTC) in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan.
F-WAVE’s flexible solar cells use the Series-Connection through Apertures formed on Film (SCAF) structure allowing a wireless connection with the electrodes, the company said.
