Ten years of helping young people thrive not just survive

A housing group in Warrington that helps young people “thrive not just survive” is celebrating its tenth anniversary this week. Verve Place on Mersey Street is part of Foyer Federation and Friday, May 14 marks ten years since the member services team launched advantaged thinking – an influential philosophy that empowers young people who can’t live at home. It focuses on an individual’s strengths rather than their weaknesses or what they need to overcome, promising to look at people’s dreams and aspirations and invest in their potential without defining everyone by their problems. Ten years ago, Colin Falconer was the director of innovation at the Foyer Federation and he introduced the programme which is central to the company.

Programme helping young people in Chester celebrate 10 years

A PROGRAMME to help young people in Chester who can t live at home is celebrating a major milestone. The Bridge Foyer is marking 10 years of Advantaged Thinking, its philosophy that empowers young people to thrive, not just survive. A decade ago, Colin Falconer, then director of innovation at the Foyer Federation, now director of InspireChilli, introduced Advantaged Thinking to the world on the TEDx stage. It has since been central to all the Foyer Federation does, including developing the first quality assurance accreditation for supported housing, national programmes for health and employability, and building young people’s leadership skills. Chester’s Bridge Foyer has 31 self-contained flats which offer supported housing for young people - who for many different reasons are unable to be at home.

Baroness Doreen Lawrence said the authors of the report are not in touch with reality . Her comments come after the report said geography, family influence, socio-economic background, culture and religion all affect life chances more than racism. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said more work needs to be done to tackle very serious issues of racism in Britain. Baroness Lawrence was made a peer in 2013 after campaigning for justice for her son who died in 1993 following a racially motivated attack in south-east London. Baroness Doreen Lawrence (pictured) said the authors of the report are not in touch with reality Overseen by chair Dr Tony Sewell, the findings from the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities were branded a whitewash by the Left, but welcomed by other campaigners
