There is but small comfort knowing I’m among the many erstwhile college hoops scribes, with a delusional belief in the power of our observations of the game we love so much, who misfired. Or, were leery of pulling the trigger.
We woke up this morning with egg on our faces, before even heading into the kitchen to make breakfast.
It’s not that I picked Gonzaga to win the title. I did not. You can go look.
But I certainly did not listen to myself.
If only I’d had the confidence to listen to my convictions, I’d be able to lord my “expertise” over all this morning after.

The men’s volleyball team fell in three straight sets against the Pepperdine Waves at Galen Center Wednesday night. USC now stands at 1-3 on the seasonand in the MPSF conference. The Trojans have lost their last three matches, winning only two sets in those three losses.
USC came close to pushing the match to four sets, taking an 18-15 lead in the third, but ultimately service errors prevented the Trojans from finishing. After holding off five Pepperdine match points, USC had an opportunity to win the set leading 28-27. However, the Waves were able to climb back and secured the win 30-28. It was the first time the Trojans were swept this season.
The top-ranked Cougars will host No. 7 Pepperdine as they continue their conference-only schedule Friday and Saturday, and coronavirus restrictions will once again limit the gathering to family members and a handful of close invited guests.

PROVO BYU basketball was able to contain Pepperdine s dynamic duo of Colbey Ross and Kessler Edwards just enough over 40 minutes Saturday night.
The Cougars weren t so lucky four days later on the back end of the back-to-back scheduling shift.
Ross had 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and Edwards added 18 points and six rebounds to help Pepperdine rally to snap BYU s four-game winning streak with a 76-73 matinee victory Wednesday at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, California.
Jan Zidek scored 13 points for Pepperdine, and Sedrick Altman supplied 11 points and nine rebounds for the Waves (7-7, 3-2 West Coast).

BOTTOM LINE: Pepperdine looks for its sixth straight win in the head-to-head series over Portland. In its last five wins against the Pilots, Pepperdine has won by an average of 12 points. Portland’s last win in the series came on Feb. 1, 2018, an 85-76 victory.
STEPPING UP: Pepperdine’s Colbey Ross has averaged 18 points and 7.2 assists while Kessler Edwards has put up 16.9 points and 5.7 rebounds. For the Pilots, Ahmed Ali has averaged 17.8 points while Eddie Davis has put up 11.5 points and five rebounds.
