Cardinal George Pell – the former prefect of the Vatican’s Secretariat for the Economy – called for stronger fiscal accountability procedures at the Vatican, in a recent interview with CNA.
Referring to questionable investments and transactions by the Vatican’s Secretariat of State – including controversial investments in a London property which lost an estimated $100 million – Cardinal Pell, 80, expressed gratitude that those transactions have been made known to the public by reporters.
“Now to what extent it is gross incompetence, to what extent it is their willing connivance, to what extent criminal activity is involved – I simply don’t know, but it’s good that it’s come to light,” he said. “What is much more important is that the investment procedures are standardized, and that disastrous investments like this just don’t happen again.”

Police in the south-central Vietnamese province of Phu Yen on Thursday started legal proceedings against five forest protection officials for their lack of responsibility and abusing positions and power while on duty, leading to serious consequences in a deforestation case last May.
Four of the officials have faced the accusation of showing their lack of responsibility and causing serious consequences, including Nguyen Van Thuan, 24, Cao Tan Khoi, 32, Nguyen Huu Toan, 36, and Huynh Kim Truc, 49.

Vietnamese police on Thursday apprehended Truong Chau Huu Danh, a famous Facebook user and former journalist, for abusing “the rights to free speech, press freedom” to “hurt state interests.”
Danh, 38, was arrested by police officers in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, Major General Nguyen Van Thuan, director of the Can Tho police department, confirmed on Thursday afternoon.
He is charged with “abusing the rights to free speech, press freedom … and other democratic freedoms to hurt state interests as well as the legal rights and interests of organizations and individuals,” Thuan said, citing the criminal code.
