hello and welcome to newswatch, with me samira ahmed. praise but also concerns about how bbc news reported the terrible grenfell tower block fire in london. and was the general election result wrongly presented as a disaster for the conservatives and a triumph for labour? there have been many shocking and distressing images on the news recently and tuesday night s fire which engulfed a west london block of flats provided yet more. the following morning victoria derbyshire spoke to a man who had escaped from the tower. there is a man who threw two of his children. two of his children. come on, man. wow. we saw a lot. we saw a lot, man. we saw a lot with our own eyes. we saw friends, families. honestly, it s all right, you don t have to say any more. sandra martin e mailed us with this message about victoria derbyshire: some viewers, though, objected to what they saw as the intrusive nature of that interview. and others, including this one from home affairs editor mark easton.

the george medal in the queen s birthday honours. hello and welcome to the programme. protests have taken place in london to demand justice for the victims of the grenfell tower fire and support for survivors who ve been left homeless. the number of people known to have died has risen to at least 30 but the bbc believes that the total could be at least 70. anger boiled over at a demonstration at the headquarters of kensington and chelsea council, which owns grenfell tower, when protesters tried to force their way in. there were also demonstrations in central london. ourfirst report is from jeremy cooke. crowd chants: we want justice! the target is the council office, the council which owns the tower. the crowd demands answers. we need to be heard! we all have things to say! we are in pain! i understand that the response we get from the council is not satisfactory. they want to hear from the local authority officials who they hold responsible. justice! how could this tragedy

to piece together what happened and how the blaze spread so quickly throughout the building. there now three inquiries by the police, by the fire brigade, and the full public inquiry. our home affairs correspondent tom symonds now on the questions the public inquiry will have to consider. it is the first obvious question. and it will be for the fire brigade to answer. the accounts of the residents will be important. this video was shot 20 minutes or so after a fridge caught light on the fourth floor. the guy s fridge was by his kitchen window. the fire had already gone on the outside, and the wind helped it, and then all of a sudden, the cladding has fallen. he said the cladding caught. and that leads to question number two. it shouldn t have. the building was redesigned with aluminium panels in 2016. the work was signed off by the council. so far there is no evidence standards were breached, but. the minimum safety standards which is expected for a building to keep it reas
