where the situation is just really scary. zero icu beds as a result of all the covid cases they re seeing there. it s led to a group of hospitals to write an open letter to residents, essentially saying they may not be able to help if they need help. part of that letter saying, soon, you or a loved one may need us for life-saving care, and we might not be able to help. we need your help. get vaccinated, get boosted, wear your mask, socially distance, stay home if you re sick. those words from hospital systems in oklahoma really underscoring just how dire of a situation that they re still dealing with here, a third year into the pandemic. absolutely. what a scary scenario that they re laying out there. so, also, nick, tell us about the latest showdown over masks in virginia. reporter: yeah, we ve seen these issues really play out in schools across the country. we saw issues with unions in chicago, new york, students not showing up for, you know, the start of the school year. now, in

everybody is we re just seeing a lot right now. reporter: appalachian regional health care has 13 facilities across eastern kentucky and west virginia. its entire system now overwhelmed by covid. we have no icu beds available across 13 facilities. zero icu beds available. we have 35 patients waiting in our ers for beds. reporter: today appalachian regional health care has three regular beds available across it entire system. they have cleared space and made room for 200 beds that sit empty unable to staff them. we have applied for fema disaster medical teams at mel of our hospitals. our understanding is right now that louisiana is in dire need and so most of their teams are there, so we are on the list. and once they have availability, we hope that we will be able to get support. reporter: the hospital system
