Welcome to the first SwitchArcade Special of 2024. It has been almost two years since Shaun wrote about the best shoot em ups (or shmups) on Switch, and a lot has changed since then, mostly for the better.
The virus is changing, and we also need to change. We need to adjust our collective attitude to Covid-19 in Europe. In most of the western world, Covid-19 has been treated like a natural calamity such as a major flood. A flood is something we cannot control, because it is caused by the weather. We endure it, and mitigate for the damage caused. We live with floods when we have to, and it would be ridiculous to expect any government to deliver a Zero Flood policy.
But Covid-19 is closer to a fire than a flood. Like a fire, it multiplies when allowed oxygen and fuel. The nature of SARS-CoV-2 transmission means the virus population can double and double and double. Unchecked, it can grow at an alarming rate and engulf us in flames. It cannot be kept stable or simmering at low levels.
