QUETTA: President Dr Arif Alvi handing over the key of a tractor to a farmer during the ceremony on Tuesday. PPI QUETTA: President Dr Arif Alvi on Tuesday underlined the need for evolving a comprehensive strategy to resolve the issue of water shortage and increase agricultural production in Balochistan. Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Balochistan Green Tractor Programme, the president lauded the ongoing projects launched by the provincial government for promotion of the agriculture sector, including the tractor scheme. In Balochistan, he said, immense potential existed for promotion of agriculture, fisheries, livestock and other sectors. Dr Alvi gave the example of Vietnam that he said having a coastline smaller than Balochistan’s had increased its annual fisheries exports from $300 million to $10 billion. He said that with China alone spending $70bn per annum on the import of Halal meat, huge foreign exchange could be earned through livestock.

UN body helps develop apple value chain in Balochistan - Newspaper

QUETTA: Balochistan Minister for Agriculture Zamarak Khan Piralizai has said that support from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (Unido) in the development of the apple value chain in six districts of the province will have a profound effect on the livelihood of people of these areas. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the event ‘Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) Guidelines for the apple value chain in Balochistan’, the minister said without embracing modern practices, progress in the agriculture sector was not possible. He said that Balochistan was the largest but the least developed province in Pakistan and Unido’s Project for Agri-food and Agro-industry Development Assistance (PAFAID) would contribute considerably to the capacity of the agriculture department and the private stakeholders in producing value-added products that could be sold at good prices.
