A Russian playwright and theatre director accused of "justifying terrorism" told a Moscow court on Monday they were innocent, as authorities ramp up the censorship and suppression of dissenting artists.
Zhenya Berkovich and Svetlana Petriychuk were arrested in May 2023, despite their play no longer being staged. Their trial is the first high-profile case since Soviet times to be based on the contents of a theatre production.
