worried about, those orders have since changed. but you think about the level of fear that parents and family go through with their kids just being deployed into battle zones. and you have to worry, now we have to worry about them just being on base in america. i was there going on special report in 2009 when major nidal hasan killed 13 people, a mass murder at ft. hood. and it s really, it s really a traumatic to me. well, for any parent or friend how could it be anything but. i m so glad your son is there. thank him for his service to us. good to talk to you. caller: thanks, shep. we re waiting for this news conference to come from ft. hood. it s our understanding that they ll be holding it right there at the main gate. why would a man do such a thing. of course we ll be live
radicalized. we have looked and so far no red flags, no indicators at all that this person who is being named ivan lopez fits into that category at all we will learn much more in the minutes ahead, shep. the way this has been described by jennifer griffin and others. first, i might point out by our correspondent, jana winter from foxnews.com that this began, at least, as a soldier on soldier confrontation. and what we are being led to believe, at least in the early going and we will hear official word soon, that it just spread from there. that s a hard thing to even think about happening. a confrontation between two that spreads to leaving four people total dead, including the shooter and 14 others in the hospital. it s unthinkable. and what s also very unclear, shep, is exactly where this began and where it ended. we believe tended outside near the motor pool of this medical facility building. we don t know if it began inside. and if this shooter was trying to shoot his way outsid
ivan lopez. we are believed that the shooter is believed to be dead at this point in time, shep. i believe it was reporting earlier that authorities believed that the shooter first killed some other soldiers or others in general and then it wasn t as if someone killed him but it s believed he killed himself. right? it s believed that he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound but we do not have official confirmation of that at this point. first medical brigade and near the motor pool area we re told. that s where those 20 or so shots 20 shots rang out and that s where much of the gunfire has taken place. we can confirm from multiple sources that the gunman, the shooter himself is specialist ivan lopez. all right, jennifer. thanks very much. back to jennifer griffin as news breaks. our team behind us here is
processing there. it was originally set up as a place where tanks could practice and you have the first cavalry down there. so, this is a very large facility to ascribe what may have been the motive of this shooter at this point in time it s really premature at this point. you reported at the time of this, close to five years ago, jennifer, that they had increased security. that they had all kinds of different procedures put into place to try to identify soldiers, since you say that this shooter, who is now dead who is believed to have been a soldier, to try to identify people who might be a threat. and i know they had gone to great lengths to do this. i think what is so baffling at this point in time, shep, and it shows just how difficult it is to defend against these kind of shooting incidents is after the fort hood shooting in 2009, a year later, the defense department came out with a whole slew of 45 pages of recommendations of
