Oklahoma health professionals share perspectives on being Indigenous

Oklahoma health professionals share perspectives on being Indigenous Oklahoman Breaking barriers © Photo provided Dr. Eagle Road Being an unapologetic Choctaw physician, I m able to help my fellow tribal citizens and our neighbors get the medical care they deserve. For decades tribal citizens have faced medical marginalization in the Indian Health Service and in private health clinics. Tribal patients have shared with me how important it is to have a physician that not only looks like them but understands their background and their struggles. Being Indigenous in 2021 to me means breaking barriers for my tribal patients and encouraging other tribal youth, no matter their shade, to pursue careers they love because we need successful Indigenous people in every space to show that, not only are we resilient, we are thriving.
