There's big snowstorms. And then there's the 'Great White Hurricane' of 1888

Don t miss the big stories. Like us on Facebook.   MANCHESTER — The snowstorm that dropped three feet or more on the Northshire two weeks ago was the biggest in recent memory. “I’ve never seen that much snow,” Shawn Harrington of the Manchester Historical Society said, “and I’ve lived here my whole life.” But in the history books, the Great Blizzard of 1888 remains an all-time champion for sheer impact and jaw-dropping photos of drifts that dwarf people, trolley cars and even some buildings. Also known as “The Great White Hurricane,” the Great Blizzard of 1888 began on March 11 and dumped as much as 58 inches of snow on an area from the Maryland to Maine, and north into Canada. In an age when “heavy snow removal equipment” was a large man with a shovel, the storm paralyzed commerce and transportation for days. It was blamed for some 400 deaths, 200 in New York City alone.
