morgan chesky right outside, very close to where this rocket will be taking off. what are you seeing there? reporter: jose, these final preparations are now underway. that crew safely inside that capsule. and we just have a few minutes now before we re going to see what is a one of a kind sight, no matter where you are. and that is a rocket lifting off from the west texas desert floor, and rising more than 60 miles above the earth s surface. we were not this close last time, at least i was not. i was in the neighboring city of van horn, but you could see that ignition and see that rocket go skyward. it sticks you forever. but to now just be a few miles from where that rocket will be lifting off, we ll have a much different scene here, on a blue sky sunshine day, from what looks to be a pretty perfect flight. that hold temporarily went about 18 minutes before being lifted,

it looks like it was a pristine launch and landing. everybody is giving the thumbs up that they re okay. william shatner becoming the oldest person to reach space. how did it look from your vantage point, morgan, and i almost feel like i heard william shatner say this is unlike you d ever experience in your life or experience again. yeah. incredible sight. we believe that s what he said as the oldest person to go to space, look down. prior to the trip he said that he was looking forward to being entranced by looking down on the blue orren of earth. i can only imagine that s what he was doing during that three or four minutes of weightlessness when it hit the peak distance traveling along the carmen line before making a safe return to the west texas desert floor. there was nervous anticipation on behalf of shatner. we know that has excited as he was about this trip, he says that he was equally excited

plan? reporter: according to blue origin, it was flawless as could be. saw a countdown pass at the 15 minute mark, last minute preparations put in place, crew safely put in the capsule and hatch closed. when countdown resumed, everything went according to bezos and the company exactly as intended. rising from the west texas desert floor, crossing the carmen line, reaching the internationally recognized boundary of space, and what was incredible to see, when the rocket broke off from the capsule, returned exactly to the spot it lifted from, and that soft landing on the desert floor via par a shoot and small thrust ter rocket was incredible, as was the massive welcome celebration they found stepping outside the capsule, kind of a sea of smiles, hugs, funny cowboy hats as well. garrett? as a space geek myself, i was into it. our colleague, stephanie ruhle,

reporter: the launch is nine days after richard branson skimmed the edge of space. bezos didn t call it a competition, there are key differences. this is a true rocket that will be piloted from the ground. branson had a pilot on board, then dropping back to the west texas desert floor via parachute for hopefully a soft landing. bezos wanted to stress the fact he hopes this paves the way, pointing to the young astronaut on board, trips like this he hopes to inspire the next generation of space goers. he says they have future plans in place for that, chris. if all goes according to plan, two more this year, september and october, and hope to be able to reuse the rocket going skyward tomorrow morning. chris? morgan chesky on location. tomorrow, tune in for special coverage. bezos and team take off in texas.
