China Box Office: Zhang Yimou’s ‘Cliff Walkers’ Outrun By ‘My Love’ in Labor Day Weekend Debuts Variety 1 hr ago
Zhang Yimou’s snowy period spy thriller “Cliff Walkers” debuted in China this Labor Day holiday weekend with $37.7 million. But it was outrun by local rom-com “My Love,” which took a comfortable box office victory.
That tale of young love starring Taiwan’s Greg Hsu and Zhang Ruonan of the popular TV show “Cry Me A Sad River” opened Friday to earn $65.1 million over three days, according to data from Artisan Gateway. Produced by Youth Enlight Pictures and directed by Han Tian (“Only the Wind Knows”), it grossed almost double the earnings of any competitor.
China Box Office: Godzilla vs. Kong Walloped Again by Local Drama Sister

“Godzilla vs. Kong” was once again muscled out of the top China box office slot by local drama “Sister” thanks to a $13.2 million third weekend cume that was no match for the latter’s $21 million.
Its China tally was a touch less than its $13.4 million second weekend sales in North America. Though “Godzilla” is being hailed Stateside as the highest grossing film domestically since the pandemic began for its $69.5 million cume to date, that figure is less than half its earnings in China thus far.
