[bell ringing] [bell ringing] when the franciscan missionaries were sent from mexico into upper california, they were told to go to specific locations and establish missions which would in turn become pueblos. the spanish term for self-governing community, become a civic center of sorts. so san luis obispo essentially grew out of the mission. this is mission san luis obispo which was founded in 1772 by a father. will you see the statue at all 21 of the california missions. even missions that the father didn t start. thi
