Australia commenced its COVID-19 vaccine program for children aged 12–15 years from
July 2021 and for children aged 5–11 years from January 2022 with two primary doses
of either Comirnaty (Pfizer–BioNTech BNT162b2, 10 μg for 5–11 years and 30 μg for
12–15 years) or Spikevax (Moderna mRNA-1273, 50 μg for 6–11 years and 100 μg for 12–15
years), 8 weeks apart. A booster dose is recommended for those aged 5–15 years with
complex health conditions or severe immunocompromise.
Today the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has confirmed two new cases of TTS (thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome) in persons who were vaccinated in WA are likely associated with AstraZeneca vaccination.

Today the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has confirmed a case of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) in a Western Australian is likely linked to the Astra Zeneca vaccine.
We are working closely with our counterparts in the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and the Northern Territory Department of Health to investigate the case.
The woman, aged in her 40’s, is currently under specialist care in the Royal Darwin Hospital. She received the AstraZeneca vaccine in mid-March in a WA regional hospital.
Due to patient confidentiality, WA Health will not be releasing further detail around this patient. The family has asked for their privacy to be respected but has said the patient was making positive progress and recovering well.

Anaphylactic reactions to COVID-19 vaccines in Western Australia
As Western Australia’s Chief Health Officer, I would like to provide an update on the vaccination program with a particular focus on safety and side effects.
There is a wealth of safety data globally and we have now vaccinated more than 22,000 people in Western Australia.
Overnight, information has come to light about four cases of people potentially experiencing anaphylactic reactions (severe allergic reaction) within 30 minutes of receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine in Queensland, which have been reported to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
Since commencing the COVID vaccination program, the WA Vaccine Safety Advisory Committee has received reports of two individuals treated with adrenaline for an allergic reaction following COVID vaccination – one after receipt of the Pfizer vaccine, of which we have administered 13,292 doses, and one after AstraZeneca v
