Buddhist monks light candles to commemorate Visakha Bucha Day, a celebration of the birth, enlightenment and death of the Lord Buddha held on the full moon of the third lunar month in the Buddhist calendar, at Wat Dhammakaya Buddhist temple on the outskirts of Bangkok.
Today is the most important day for followers of Buddhism all over the world. According to the Lunar calendar, today is full moon day, which coincides with the birthday, enlightenment day and passing day of Gautama Buddha. Different countries celebrate this day in different names but the essence and importance of the day is similar. Thai people celebrate today as Visakha Bucha Day whereas Nepali people celebrate it as Buddha Jayantee. The United Nations celebrates today as Day of Vesak. In recognition of Buddhism's contribution to world peace and harmony, the United Nations recognised in the year 1999, "the Day of Vesak". Such recognition is a matter of pride for all of us.
Today marks Visakha Bucha Day, one of the most important Buddhist holidays in the Thai calendar. It's when three significant yet separate events took place Lord Buddha was born, became enlightened and died on this very day.

PHUKET: The Ministry of Culture is asking people to make merit by staying at home for the Buddhist religious holiday Visakha Bucha today (May 26).

Visakha Bucha is a national public holiday during which Buddhists throughout the country traditionally gather at temples to join ceremonies, including the candle-lit processions.
Instead of people joining large gatherings at temples, the Ministry of Culture is advising Buddhists this year to stay home and join ceremonies and festivities to be held online.
“Wherever you are, you can make merit,” the ministry noted in a post online yesterday, ahead of today’s main ceremonies.
