Cloud's industrial revolution - Salesforce's Chief Product Officer explains why it's not "all CRM to me" anymore

Read later Audio version Summary: Putting the shift to industry clouds into context, Salesforce CPO David Schmaier makes the case for why customers want vertically-focused solutions. I think this is the future of where the whole industry is going - if you have the choice between industry-specific and not, why wouldn t you choose the industry-specific version for your business? So said David Schmaier, President and Chief Product Officer at Salesforce, speaking at the Cowen 49th Annual Technology, Media & Telecom Conference last week as part of a session that provided a useful piece of context-setting for the cloud firm’s hosting of today’s Industries Summit.

Vertical Urbanization As Seen From Above

Copy Because of the decrease in the availability of land area and the ever-increasing price per square meter, cities often tend to grow vertically. When we picture large metropolitan areas, we almost always imagine high-rise buildings, and the recognizable skyline becomes an icon that immediately evokes the places in which they are located. If we compare it to the Cartesian coordinate system, this vertical growth makes the z-axis assume a greater significance and thus requires a more distant point of view to better understand its form. By looking at these tall buildings from afar and grasping their surroundings - either close, still within the city limits, or on the outskirts - one can identify even the most invisible aspects.

Vertical Greenery: Impacts on the Urban Landscape

Japan introduces urban vegetable gardens in train stations. Courtesy of popupcity.net Such projects are examples of how to cultivate different plant species for human consumption or not in other ways than growing directly on the ground. Although vertical greenery can assume different configurations depending on the structure, the species, and the context in which it is inserted, all these solutions have in common the optimization of open green spaces even though occupying as little horizontal space as possible. In this sense, the impacts of plants on cities, which are already widely acknowledged, take on a new dimension through verticality. These alternative cultivation methods are used to reduce heat islands, increase biodiversity, promote food security, improve air quality, reduce CO2 emissions, among many other positive effects.
