With bebop-rooted living legends such as drummer Roy Haynes, saxophonist Sonny Rollins and pianist Herbie Hancock in their 80s and 90s, the spring edition of the Exit Zero Jazz Festival has a focus on artists age 50 and younger and those whose careers started in the 1990s or more recently.
Samara Joy Hailing from a family of musicians in the Bronx with roots in gospel, Joy began her journey with jazz at age 17, winning the vocal honors at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington competition. She went on to study with the great Barry Harris and win the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition.
