When a high percentage of the population is protected through vaccination, it becomes harder for the disease to pass between people. although cases have plummeted in the last couple of years, largely due to social distancing and travel bans, the uk health security agency s concerned measles could make a comeback in the unvaccinated, when covid restrictions are fully lifted. even a small drop in vaccine uptake can lead to outbreaks occurring. and why the focus on mmr? it s because measles would be the first infection we would expect to see come back. it s like the canary in the coal mine. and once we have international travel opened up, and covid restrictions lifted, we expect measles to come back into this country, and for it to spread in those who are not fully protected with two doses of the mmr vaccine. young children can get the mmr vaccine for free on the nhs when they turn one, with a second dose offered at around ....
We have the data for three doses, that instills further confidence, which is a major reason because we know that for older kids, that vaccine uptake is really low. i don t want to have any level of discomfort or lack of confidence around the data when they come out. and this has been so confusing for so many parents, who are eager to get their kids vaccinated. do you think it was a mistake for pfizer to start this process, get everybody s hopes up before all this data was ready? i think it would have been worse if the fda went through with their meeting on tuesday and then their advisers may have voted down the authorization. that would have caused a lot of confusion and then the anti-vaxxers would have seized on that and said well, look, experts don t agree. i think it is much better to pull back now, and say we just don t have enough data. it s not that the data aren t solid, it s we don t have them, and so let s wait until we get all the data in. again, i think this to me, again ....
Say these vaccines get authorized by late february, if that s the case, the numbers for omicron, numbers for covid are going to look very different. we re in the middle of an omicron peak right now but that s not going to be the case for forever. and i think the decision-making is also going to look different, too. look, at any point when vaccines are first authorized for any age group there are people who are the early adopters who cannot wait and would want any level of protection. but there are others who want to wait and see and maybe they want others to go first. and then there are others who also want to know what s in it for me? what s in it for my children? when you look at the 5 to 11-year-olds, it would have made a big difference in vaccine uptake if the administration, if the cdc and others have said very clearly once your child is vaccinated, masks are optional. i think tying vaccination to an off ramp to masking is going to be really critical for increasing vaccine uptake, ....
Now relaxing self-isolation measures. beginning today, those who test positive, but remain asymptomatic will only be required to isolate for seven days. in the coming hours, chile will be rolling out its second booster dose to people ages 55 and up. chile has found extraordinary success with vaccine uptake. about 90% of the population is fully vaccinated. meanwhile, in the u.s., a bipartisan group of lawmakers will hold a moment of silence later today for the more than 900,000 americans who have died from the coronavirus. for more on this, i am joined now by dr. scott miskovich, president and c.e.o. of premiere medical group usa, and also a u.s. consultant for covid-19 testing. thank you, doctor, for talking with us. sure, rosemary. so, it has to be said, that ....
