Scholars Under Surveillance: How Campus Police Use High Tech to Spy on Students

Body-worn cameras Maybe your school has a film department, but the most prolific cinematographers on your college campus are probably the police.  Since the early 2010s, body-worn cameras (BWCs) have become more and more common in the United States. This holds true for law enforcement agencies on university and college campuses. These cameras are attached to officers’ uniforms (often the chest or shoulder, but sometimes head-mounted) and capture interactions between police and members of the public. While BWC programs are often pitched as an accountability measure to reduce police brutality, in practice these cameras are more often used to capture evidence later used in prosecutions.

Another weekend, another party. Yet, no suspensions from administration and few expect that to change

Another weekend, another party. Yet, no suspensions from administration and few expect that to change More than 100 people gathered for a frat party at an off-campus location on Feb. 28. Photo credit: Jesse Lieberman With maskless students packed close together on a sunny day in Miami, there appears to be no thought of COVID-19. As University of Miami and police departments fail to curtail Greek Life partying, fraternities and sororities continue operations as normal on a weekly basis. On Feb 27., Greek Life hosted a party at 6520 SW 72nd Court in unincorporated Miami-Dade County. The party had more than 100 people and was hosted by Sigma Chi, according to one source.
