The Tamil worker was held incommunicado at Aralaganwila Police Station in the eastern district of Polonaruwa. He was arrested while traveling from his home in Udappuwa in the Chilaw area to visit relatives in the northern town of Vavunia. Like many Tamils he was forced to flee south because of the government’s communalist war against the Tamil population in the north. He was residing legally in the south under the Sri Lankan government’s internal travel restrictions. ....

Dec 20, Colombo: The Sri Lanka Navy has seized 1,900 kilograms of turmeric worth more than Rs. 11 million at Sinnapadu beach in Mundalama this morning. The turmeric stock smuggled from India was packed in 59 waterproof polythene bags and then in fertilizer sacs. The market value of the stock was over Rs. 11 million, the Navy officials said. The raid was carried out by the Intelligence Unit of the Udappuwa sub unit at the Thambapanni Naval Base. The suspects had fled in a fishing vessel during the raid, the Navy said. The Navy officials said the consignment of turmeric had been smuggled from India by sea in violation of the quarantine laws. ....
