c-span3 online at c-span.org, , and on the free c-span radio app. this week on q&a, amy greenberg talking about her book on sarah polk. amy greenberg, why did you name your book lady first? prof. greenberg: well, it wasn t the title that the press wanted. when i thought about first lady sarah polk, and how she deployed power, i thought about the fact that, in her own mind, she was always a lady before anything else. she thought of herself as mrs. james k. polk. she was very invested in people differing to her, but she was also willing to defer to men. and she also considered herself a lady, so i thought lady first was a good title. brian: what would you say about their relationship? prof. greenberg: james and sarah polk had about as close and positive of a relationship as any married couple could have. they were rarely separated. the reason sarah came to washington in the first place when james was a new congressman , and she was just 22 years old, was because t

do, too, she has brought to the floor those who have the most pressing interest and those who worked tirelessly largely unrecognized in achieving emancipation and therefore, those were the slaves, the people who had the most vital interest and her book lincoln and emancipation fills a gap that s been left in the story of emancipation but bringing to the floor the important role that so many blacks played in changing the face of our nation and bringing about emancipation. i ve been counseled to be brief and so with that i d like to introduce dr. edna green medford. to the the telegraph department or whether it was the department of war. obviously, there were secret communications happening. there s also the story about the confederacy where there was a secret message around cigars that was mishandled. my question is, are there any lessons i think there s lessons in lincoln s life. are there any lyessons that coud be carried over to this issue of communication and the need to have communications be private and confidential? well, lincoln didn t have e-mails. but he had telegrams. and that was the internet of its day. and he would go, as anyone who has seen the lincoln movie recalls, to the telegraph office, which was located in the department of war right across from the white house where the old executive office building is today. and he would spend a good deal of his time there with secretary of war stanton and receive the latest communication. it was in that office that he wrote the first draft of the emancipation proclamation.

we ve been live on american history tv from the world war i centennial symposium at the macarthur memorial in norfolk, virginia. we ll reair the day s events this evening at 8:00 eastern here on c-span 3. up next constitutional law professor michael gere hardt talks about his book the forgotten presidents and discusss 13 presidents least remembered by americans due in large part to their strict constitutional vision. the national constitution center hosted this event and it runs about an hour and 10 minutes. this book is spectacular. i was so excited to read it this book on the forgotten presidents. what michael has done is take a topic which seems like a parlor game, these obscure presidents we don t remember well, and revealed that the constitution was at the center both of their failures, devotion to a particular constitutional vision but also that their failures laid the groundwork for the success of more powerful presidents. this is a constitution saturated book. it
