Traditionally, RAN - the basic building block of a telecom network - has proprietary technologies of global players such as Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei and ZTE etc. Telecom players have to buy an entire block - software and hardware from one vendor, while through Open RAN, they can mix and match software and hardware components, ultimately bringing in more innovation by diversifying the ecosystem.
Satellite Communications: However, satcom will likely be a small market for consumers like mobile services but will play a significant role in segments such as defence, aviation, maritime and government sectors. Startups will play a major role in creating and developing a set of new use cases for the satcom sector.
Samsung: Seeing the traction, Chinese companies such as Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Honor, and Motorola have also started pushing the envelope further with frequent launches globally with a focus on innovation in the hinge, battery life and cover displays (for the flip form factor). Many of these companies have now set their eyes on India, sensing potential growth in the market.
Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea in their submissions to TRAI had said it is too early to regulate an emerging technology whose growth can be stifled.
Bharti Airtel: Reliance Jio recently announced the launch of its new Jio AirFiber product in 8 cities - Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune - while Airtel’s XStream AirFiber is available in 2 cities - Delhi and Mumbai. Currently, both the operators offer FTTH (fiber to the home) services.
