This is how the Northwest Territories government is filling the gap after the temporary day shelter at Yellowknife s Mine Safety Building closed on Monday.
People can visit the encampment beside the vacant Aspen Apartments on 51st Street to grab a bite to eat, store their belongings, and use the portable toilets, but they can t nap comfortably or do laundry inside the building.

The territorial government is moving ahead with plans to build a new and much larger day shelter and sobering centre in downtown Yellowknife. The government wants to build the new center on a lot near the Tree of Peace Friendship Centre on 51st Street.

The N.W.T. government is acquiring the Tree of Peace Friendship Centre on 51st Street to establish a temporary shelter until the Salvation Army can reopen its doors.
In a Thursday night news release, the government said Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs Paulie Chinna was invoking the Emergency Measures Act, which allows the minister to acquire public or private property to alleviate the emergency.
Yellowknife group hands out hundreds of Christmas presents to families in need
An epic bottle drive last month provided the funding for more than $6,000 in toys, books, sports equipment and other presents being handed out for free.
