External Relations Minister Ian Gorst’s proposals would, if approved, update regulations so that a list of approved countries, subject to checks by international bodies, is put together where profits from the industry would no longer be categorised as criminal proceeds, providing they are viewed as lawful in the jurisdiction of origin.
The move comes as countries where Jersey’s finance sector has strong business interests, such as the USA and Canada, have increasingly decriminalised the production and sale of cannabis, in particular for medical use and in some areas for recreational consumption.

FOREIGN investors should be banned from purchasing buy-to-let homes within the proposed new Waterfront development and adequate social housing should be included in any future plans, the former Housing Minister has said.

Senator Sam Mezéc has lodged a States proposition after the Jersey Development Company announced in the summer that a 12-year scheme to ‘transform’ the Waterfront would take place, with hopes to submit an outline planning application by the spring of next year.
And the Senator, who stepped down as Housing Minister last month to back a motion of no confidence in the Chief Minister, Senator John Le Fondré, wants to make certain the development does not become dominated with buy-to-let homes.
