near the gaza strip s southern border with egypt, trying to escape intense fighting elsewhere. the head of humanitarian affairs for the united nations says there is no longer any humanitarian operation worthy of that name in the south of gaza. meanwhile, aid agencies estimate nearly two million people have already been displaced that s almost 80% of gaza s population. thousands have tried to go to un schools to find shelter, but have had to sleep in front of buildings as there is no room for them. and most of those are struggling to find safe water and food, deepening the humanitarian crisis as israel s military operation against hamas grinds on. for more on the aid situation, here s our diplomatic correspondent paul adams in jerusalem. the israeli army is now fighting intense street battles with three parts of the gaza strip, two in the north, in the jabalia refugee camp and gaza city known as shejaiya. both areas the israelis have described as hamas strongholds. also in t
that. sam kylie, appreciate it. thank you. it is not exclusively ukrainians fighting this war. but a month ago, ukrainians spent days with three american veterans of the wars on iraq and afghanistan. they ve gone to ukraine on their own dime to help train volunteers. isa soares has stories of americans who are there not to train. they re there to fight. reporter: for weeks now, these volunteer fighters have been defending a country that is not theirs. i saw on the news, just like everybody else, the atrocities that the russians were committing. that s the reason why i came. reporter: the two americans and the canadian, who prefer we identify them by their nicknames, tell me that from their experiences with one particular unit, the ukrainian forces they have been fighting alongside on the front lines are ill-equipped and cut off from resources.
consider the next move and i think it very much depends on what happens with the conflict. if it comes closer to that area into the west then we might well see another movement towards the border and then to poland. the u.n. says the vast majority are women and children leaving. you have warned and the agency warned of risks of trafficking. talk to me about the work that you are doing to try to mitigate that. the polish authorities are managing the refugee response. but we are working with those authorities but also with agencies like unicef to go in and help them. train volunteers. starting to set up structures of
