The traditional ruler of Igbariam in the Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Nkeli Nzekwe, is dead.
The Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C-Don Adinuba, who confirmed his death, said the monarch had been buried.
Nzekwe was among the 13 monarchs suspended in August 2020 by the state government for travelling to Abuja to visit the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, (retd) without permission from the state government.
The state governor, Willie Obiano, had however on January 1 pardoned Nzekwe and two others, stating that the action was taken in the spirit of the New Year. ....

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo general assembly has threatened to arrest Prof. George Obiozor, a frontline presidential contender in the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation.
Others being threatened with arrest are those contesting elections into chapters of the organisation at various levels.
The President-General of the Ohaneze General Assembly, Basil Onyeacholam, disclosed this to our correspondents in Awka, Anambra State, on Thursday.
Saying any attempt to conduct election for the leadership of Ohanaeze was illegal, Onyeacholam pointed out that his organisation was the authentic representative of the Igbo.
He added that law enforcement agencies had been informed to act accordingly. ....

The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, may announce a fresh lockdown in the state following the rise in COVID-19 infections.
A governor’s aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Obiano was no longer comfortable with the rate the disease was spreading in the state.
The aide said, “The governor is just being considerate; otherwise he would have announced lockdown in the state before Christmas. Our people are abusing the privileges given them. The governor is thinking of a lockdown to save the lives of the people.”
A statement on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C-Don Adinuba, read in part, “Reports across Anambra State show a huge increase in the incidence which, if not arrested now, will produce a catastrophic result in the near future. ....

Stop harassing people over 2023 vice-presidential promise, IPOB tells Umahi

The Indigenous People of Biafra has asked the Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi, to stop intimidating citizens of the state because he has allegedly been promised the position of vice-presidential in 2023.
This warning was contained in a statement signed by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, on Tuesday.
The group alleged that the governor ordered the arrest of innocent locals that reportedly exposed the atrocities of terrorist herdsmen in Ebonyi communities.
The statement read in part, “We the Indigenous People of Biafra wish to warn Gov Umahi against the grave implications of his actions. Declaring law abiding citizens wanted simply because they exposed and confronted foreign terrorists in Ebonyi State is worse than terrorism itself. ....

The Anambra State Government has announced a new resumption date for primary and secondary schools in the state.
A statement by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Basic Education, Nwabueze Nwankwor, said primary and post-primary schools in the state would reopen on January 18.
The statement read partly, “Anambra State has announced a new resumption date for the second half of the first term of the 2020/2021 academic session. The new date is 18th January 2021.
“The change in date is a sequel to the directive of His Excellency, Chief Dr. Willile Obiano, Governor of Anambra State. ....
