Year in preview: Local stories that will make headlines in 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic will surely continue to dominate our coverage as we turn the page to 2021. It will continue to impact schools, the court system, small businesses and more. As we move forward, here are the stories we’ll be following in 2021: Schools Wilkes-Barre Area School District plans to merge its three highs schools — GAR, Meyers and Coughlin — after opening the new consolidated high school in Plains Twp. in August or September. The $121 million project began in April 2019 and was 71% complete in December. This year’s graduating classes at GAR, Meyers and Coughlin will be the last. The district may sell the Coughlin property in downtown Wilkes-Barre and the Meyers property in South Wilkes-Barre in 2021. The district plans to use GAR as a middle school after merging the high schools.

Mohegan Sun Pocono continues to focus on safety in advance of Jan. 4 reopening

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed virtually everything from how we work and socialize to how we spend time together with our extended families, which is especially challenging at this time of the year. Millions of Pennsylvanians have lost their jobs and of thousands of businesses have been forced to close — many of them for good. As the President of Mohegan Sun Pocono, I have witnessed this impact on our team members, valued guests, and on our local service providers and vendors, many of whom are struggling. Throughout this crisis, we have remained focused on our pledge to keep our team members and guests safe. We have invested millions in making improvements to our facility and in training team members to implement our new COVID-19 mitigation protocols. I am proud of the work we have done and am struck by the resilience of our team members throughout.

Canada Revenue Agency: Do You Need to Repay CERB Money?

According to the Canada Revenue Agency, thousands of Canadians may need to repay their CERB money. “Some Canadians say they were shocked and alarmed to learn they may have to pay back thousands of dollars in pandemic benefits after receiving letters from the Canada Revenue Agency last week suggesting they may not have qualified for the Canada emergency response benefit in the first place,” reported CBC. “I was completely taken aback, and I thought, OK, this is a typo,” says Alison Griffiths, a CERB recipient who was contacted by the CRA. Musician Tony Carlucci describes what it feels like to receive the CRA letter: “My heart was pounding and I felt like someone just punched me in the stomach. But ever since then, I still can’t wrap my head around the letter,” he said. “I’m perplexed, to be honest with you, and very upset.”
