Ruth Shafer: Harmony Collective holds on

Don t miss the big stories. Like us on Facebook.   BRATTLEBORO — Harmony Collective, an artist-run gallery at 49 Elliot St., has lived most of its life during the pandemic. When the gallery opened in October of 2019, founders Kay Curtis and Kate Greenough acknowledged the usual difficulties of running a gallery, but were eager to provide a space that Brattleboro had been missing. The mission of the Harmony Collective is “to be an extraordinary place for artists and art lovers, where artists benefit from the sales of their work.” The collective is made up of 33 local artists, working in almost as many mediums. Artists pay a membership fee and monthly dues, and contribute eight hours a month working the front desk. The gallery takes only 15% from art sales, so that artists receive the maximum benefit. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day, seven days a week, with the exception of major holidays.

Longtime Cape May pizza maker says pandemic and landlord dispute crushed his business

Apr. 24—CAPE MAY, N.J. — Distant thunder rumbled over the gabled, Victorian roofs and charcoal clouds were barreling over the beach toward Mohamed Abdelsalam, but the former soldier in the Egyptian army was 20 feet up a ladder and not coming down. Mohamed, please. We can wait, said his wife, Lisa, who steadied the ladder with her son. Mohamed, 68, has been cooking up hot pies at Louie s Pizza for nearly 25 years and vowed not to leave Wednesday until he could take his sign down and move on with his life. Everything else inside the store was gone, gutted by the property owner earlier this month in a dispute over unpaid rent.

Boilo Tradition Lives on in the Coal Region

Boilo Tradition Lives on in the Coal Region by December 18, 2020 • Comments LEHIGHTON, Pa. (WLVT) - The smells of cinnamon, citrus, and whiskey are common in a coal cracker s kitchen this time of year. Boilo, also known as the coal miner s cure, is shared between family and friends during the holidays. Sean Cantwell, who grew up in Shenandoah, Schuylkill County, makes it in his kitchen. He says everyone in Schuylkill County knows about boilo. “Oh absolutely, and they will either tell you that their recipe is the best, or they will tell you about their cousin Joe’s, says Cantwell. Everyone has their own recipe, and some guard theirs closely. One ingredient all boilo makers insist on is Four Queens whiskey- it’s 101 proof- and they use it because it’s got the most bang for the buck. Cantwell says that’s what coal miners in the region always valued.
