At the turn of the 20th century, the United States’ economy was dominated by an oligarchy of industrialists. More than 100 years after their zenith, their names still resonate: Rockefeller, Carnegie, Astor, Vanderbilt and Morgan among them. These men, known as the “robber barons”, amassed wealth and power by monopolising industries. Together they presided over the gilded age of American expansion.
The era was also notoriously corrupt. The barons stopped at nothing as they built their empires. They acquired or crushed competitors, bought politicians and judges, fought unions and exploited workers. Their behaviour created a chasm of inequality across the nation. It took a Republican president Theodore Roosevelt to bring them to heel.

Two months ago, Google promoted Timnit Gebru, co-lead of a group focused on ethical artificial intelligence, after she earned a high score on her annual employee appraisal. Gebru is one of the most high-profile Black women in her field and a powerful voice in the new field of ethical AI, which seeks to identity issues around bias, fairness, and responsibility.

A lot has been said about the capabilities of artificial intelligence, from humanoid robots, self-driving cars to speech recognition. However, one aspect of AI that often doesn’t get spoken about is its carbon footprint. AI systems consume a lot of power, and resultant of this generate large volumes of carbon emissions that harm the environment and further accelerate climate change.

It is interesting to note the duality of AI in terms of its effect on the environment. On the one hand, it helps in devising solutions that can reduce the effects of climate and ecological change. Some of which include smart grid design, development of low-emission infrastructure, and climate change predictions.
