The first Black sheriff in Wyoming takes over an agency that has faced significant controversy

Aaron Appelhans, 39, has taken charge of the Albany County Sheriff s Office, which faces two pending lawsuits and calls for reform in the aftermath of the fatal shooting of Robert Robbie Ramirez by a deputy in 2018. You don t see a whole lot of African Americans in law enforcement, Appelhans told CNN. So, I m trying to overcome that roadblock of taking a non-traditional career path and affect change within my community.

CASPER â Tulsa, Oklahomaâs Greenwood District was home to more Black millionaires per capita than anywhere else in the U.S. in the early 1900s. It was a neighborhood of concentrated, generational wealth for Black communities. And in 1921, it was bombed and burned to the ground by a mob of white Tulsans in an event known today as the Tulsa race massacre.
The University of Wyomingâs Black Studies Center held a panel Feb. 15 to discuss the legacy of that moment and reflect on the film âBefore They Die,â which interviewed survivors of the Greenwood Districtâs destruction.

The University of Wyoming s Black Studies Center and UW President Ed Seidel held a town hall meeting on February 24 to address the recent racist Zoom-bombing attack that occurred during a live virtual panel on February 15.
The panel was organized as part of UW s Black History Month programming, and the topic was a discussion on the death of Tulsa s Black Wall Street. About 30 minutes into the discussion, unknown participants began voicing racial slurs, including the n-word, from behind blank screens. A graphic video depicting a violent assault was also broadcast. This particular kind of cyber hacking is known as Zoom bombing.
