Residents in some rural Eastern Cape communities endured a black Christmas without electricity after a freak thunderstorm on Saturday left behind a trail of destruction, including broken poles and blown-up transformers.
Six people have been crushed to death, 19 injured and 142 others left homeless after severe thunderstorms wreaked havoc in the Eastern Cape, destroying homes in parts of the OR Tambo district municipality last week.
