my sincere thanks to douglas for inviting me to come to the national archives. it s such a pleasure being in this beautiful city with such a rich history and thank you all so much for coming. i really appreciate it and i m very eager to hear your questions and your comments. so let me begin with the inspiration behind this project. this project was inspired by a story that my aunt told me about a distant cousin who grew up on the south side of chicago in the 1930s. the story begins with a parade. the historic but. and parade, an annual parade that continues to this day. on isis lang summer morning in august, my cousin left from her bed to find the best spot to be at the parade. she joined the crowd that numbered in the thousands and she cheered as drum majors, baton twirlers and celebrities and convertibles passed by. she ran out to the floats to touch the parade s anointed king and queen and caught the candy that the the participants toss to her. the parade was a south side
