Franklin NJ can call suspended cop as witness in disciplinary hearing

New Jersey Herald A Franklin police lieutenant suspended for allegedly misusing steroids will have to testify at his own disciplinary hearing as a witness for the borough, after a ruling Monday by the New Jersey Supreme Court. The court s decision allows attorneys representing Franklin borough and its police department to question Jeffrey Smith first, clearing the way to resume a 2019 hearing that was halted on its first day when the officer objected.  Smith had contended it would be fundamentally unfair if he was called as the first witness, which he said would force him to testify before he has heard a single witness testify against him.

Terminated Lenape Valley HS superintendent files suit against board

New Jersey Herald Lenape Valley Regional High School s superintendent is suing his own Board of Education, claiming his contract was not renewed in December because the board was seeking a younger candidate to take his place. Paul DiRupo, the 64-year-old superintendent at the Stanhope school, contends he was discriminated due to his age when Richard Kuncken, the board president, told him no other explanation for his non-renewal other than the board was going younger. DiRupo, who served in several capacities at Lenape for 32 years, filed the complaint in Sussex County Superior Court on Feb. 24.  The board s decision was egregious, unlawful and wanton, and reckless and caused DiRupo severe emotional damages and pain and suffering due to the humiliation of being terminated, the suit states.

Mountain Lakes survey to decide the course for rest of the school year

A survey is being circulated in Mountain Lakes and other districts to chart the course of public school students for the rest of the school year, asking families to choose their preference for virtual learning, in-class study or a hybrid model of instruction. Their mandatory responses are due Tuesday and will guide the district s decisions about the transition to Phase 2 of its Restart and Reentry Plan, Superintendent Michael Featherman said. We want to find out what their desires are, he said. Logistically, once we have that, we can determine what we can and can t do. The deadline for responses is 4 p.m. Tuesday. A separate survey must be submitted for each child in the system. The high school includes students from neighboring Boonton Township.
