Amid community push, Midland Beach family that lost home in fire is granted apartment application

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. After a Midland Beach family, left without a home in the wake of a devastating fire last week, was denied an application to a New Dorp apartment, community leaders rallied to support the displaced residents and helped overturn the decision.
Michelle Rosario, her husband, Randolph, her 19-year-old daughter, Lanena, and 20-year-old son, Giovanni, were contacted after the blaze by the Red Cross with temporary housing that was set to expire on Tuesday.
The family applied to a residence at the Tysens Park Apartments, but credit devastated by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and a strict guarantor policy that required a co-signer to earn 40 times the monthly rent led to a declined application, Rosario told the Advance/SILive.com, despite the fact that she and her husband both have steady jobs.
