The first word processer, the first smartphone, the first car, the first plane, it has this connotation of a breakthrough investigation thats in essence a quantum leap. And my book is about how we as a society need to be innovating more and how the really significant innovations that move the dial are these breakthrough zero to one companies. Host is Silicon Valley a zero to one, does that have a zero to one mindset . Guest theres, theres definitely Silicon Valley at this point is the center of innovation in the u. S. , and i would argue the center of innovation globally. Its, there are certainly a number of companies that have involved significant break throughs, i would say google, amazon, facebook are significant ones in recent years, apple with the iphone. Im happy to have one offline after we are done but just to be responsive to the question about millennials, you know i think one very concrete tangible reality that many people in your age cohort are facing in student debt and i think we are ripe as a country for a cross party cross ideological conversation about how to reform our student debt system and its not simply a matter of using the terms of debt. Its also thinking about to what extent has the presence and expansion of loans contributed to the escalation of the cost of college. We have to have an honest crosscutting look at this but its got to be one that is led actually by those of you in the millennial generation whose citizens are experiencing the pain and i think if you can get an issue like that would be a tangible way to get started in the country. I think eric did a great with job of talking about some of the problems that we see, that economic inequality seems to breed political inequality. We also have Health Inequalities which is, you know, tightly related to income. And i think what we should be focusing on is the welfare of our nation. And, i mean, that does include focusing on the welfare of those at the bottom of the income distribution, but we shouldnt lose sight that there are people in the middle who really, you know, have seen their incomes stagnate over the last 20 or 30 years. I will offer this, though, there are some solutions on the income inequality issue. And one of them is and im a believer in the transparency with regard to the ratios between ceos and the workers. Into volunteering, lets persuade them with a very specific benefit. Our volunteering as a pathway to employment that was released this report released last year has given us some very good news. If you are unemployed and youre looking for work and volunteer, you increase the likelihood of gaining a job about 27 . If you dont have a high school diploma, that likelihood raises up to 51 . If you live in a Rural Community and looking for woerk, you increase the likelihood about 55 . Because so many of our young people in the age group of 18 to 24 are looking for work, in fact, theyre in the bracket with the highest unemployment rates of any age group, we need to find ways to get them connected to jobs. And i think with this case study, now, that luring them in through the volunteering is a really good way to do so. Its going to help them but also the communities they served.
