Man in the photos as joseph caputo, detained after he jumped the white house fence today. criminal charges are pending. back to lockup. due to mature subject matter, viewer discretion is advised. like many jails across the country, officers at the chatham county detention center in savannah, georgia, fight a constant battle against the proliferation of contraband items. what we have here are things that are found during a daily shakedown that we have here in the jail. alongside the jail-made weapons that captain brooks says staff has confiscated from inmates over the years, are a number of improvised tattoo guns. this one right here is pretty ingenuous.

Here in the county. that was picked in with a staple. took ten hours. i had a guy from california do it, and it was pretty excruciating the way it had to go down. normal tattoos are done with surgical instruments. they re done in here with a sharpened staple, one dot at a time. so it took forever to do and it hurt really bad. other inmates craft sophisticated but illegal tattoo guns from parts of other items they are allowed to possess. any small wire can be straightened out and made into a needle. you can get motors out of appliances, tape recorders, cameras. when we see tattoo guns in prison, it s usually after they have been confiscated by authorities. i got the ink, i ve got the tattoo needles, i ve got the motor, the tattoo gun, the barrel. it s all right here. but we met a pair of cellmates who were so eager to

Some of it s missing. some of it s kind of patchy. you can see the difference between you can see how smooth, you know what i mean, almost solid black that is. single needle would be like this, where it s kind of gray and, you know, broke up. i m trying to get to it where the work that we re doing in here can compare with the work they re doing on the street. that s my goal. raising the level of prison ink work prompted sampson to create a number of unique tattoo guns. but their lives are always cut short because they re eventually confiscated. but the prison temporarily gave him back one of his prized creations so that he could show us its finer points. you recognize that? yep. this is mine. this is mine. this is a headphone cord i had altered and it plugs right into there. look at sampson playing with his toys. boy, like a kid in a toy store, huh? this is all stainless steel.

that s like my first big drug bust. i ve found a lot of shanks, a lot of tattoo guns, a lot of tobacco, but i ve never found any real hard drugs. so it s exciting. but nothing short of life-altering for cherry, who could be facing many more years in prison. he s going downtown probably get charged with distribution because of the amount of drugs that were there. and then with the amount of felonies he s got, he s probably going to get charged with habitual too. he ll probably end up doing the rest of his life in prison over that now. how much time did you have left? about six years. no matter what happens with his charges, cherry s future in prison could be perilous. this offender could be in fairly grave danger if he came back to population and it would take several months of investigation and stuff from our intel people to determine if it would be safe for him to be back in population.
