job the whole time. what is the reaction now from community members as news of this verdict sinks in? as soon as the verdict was read, there was a loud applause outside of the courtroom. members of the community are speaking right now in brooklyn center at city hall. this is the same group of people who pushed for the firing of kim potter as soon as they learned she had shot and killed daunte wright. people are relieved. there is also a sense of sadness. they want this to come to an end. i spoke with one activist after the verdict was read. he said this is a measure of accountability. and words matter. people in this community as well as the wright family are choosing and using their words carefully. they re not saying justice. they are talking about accountability. they feel this officer who had 26 years of experience, who was qualified or certified to use that taser back in 2019 was held
adrienne broaddus has more from minneapolis. reporter: kate, good morning. court began promptly with the judge reading jury instructions, following those instructions, closing arguments, starting with the prosecution, who has to bear the burden of proof. prosecutors focusing in on potter s training, specifically the training with the taser. she became certified to use the taser back in 2002 and in order to continue carrying that taser she had to be recertified every year, in some cases, scoring perfect scores on her training. by contrast, the defense maintains this was a mistake. potter did not intend to pull her gun that day. she was reaching or thought she had pulled her taser, pointing back again to the body camera video where potter shouts, taser, taser, taser! poltder, as you all know, took the stand in her own defense on
times we hear potter on that body camera video saying oh, my gold, oh, my god. at one point she says to sergeant johnson as he s trying to remove her firearm, she says, no, let me kill myself. it s likely she may talk about how she tried to end her own life if that was, in fact, the case, after she shot and killed daunte wright. there s no dispute she shot wright in the chest. but when she takes the stand, she has the opportunity to look members of this jury in the eye and explain how she made this mistake. that is the main question everyone wants to know how did she confuse the two weapons? throughout the course of this trial, we ve learned that potter has extensive experience. she became certified to use the taser back in 2002, and in order to carry the taser, it s policy, officers have to be recertified and trained every year.
