How have other communities handled gun shop locations? For example, in Dedham there must be a 150-foot buffer from residential districts, schools, houses of worship, and many other locations. However, in Bloomington, Minn., firearm businesses must be 250 feet away from schools; in Contra Costa, Calif., they must be 500 feet from schools; and in Worcester, shooting ranges must be 1,000 feet from schools, to name a few. Most neighboring communities have no zoning in place for firearm businesses, including Boston, Waltham, Watertown, Needham, and Wellesley, among others. Many councilors said there must be equity in determining where firearms dealers could be located, and were concerned that only certain neighborhoods would be zoned for them. ....

When asked if he was required to tell Fuller about the store, Interim Police Chief Howard Mintz on April 22 said that, The statute does not require notification of elected officials or call for any public hearings or notice. Wicked Local An emotional Tarik Lucas said “I’m feeling honored and emotional” on Tuesday night after winning the Ward 2 councilor-at-large seat. When asked how he felt about the win he said he was crying, “tears of joy.” Lucas, who received 7,503 votes, beat out competitors Bryan Barash, who received 6,346 votes, and David Micley, who got 611. John Oliver, who received 7,812 votes for the Ward 1 councilor-at-large seat, beat his rival Madeline Ranalli, who received 6,436 votes. Oliver could not be reached on Tuesday night for comment. According to a Tuesday email from Mayor Ruthanne Fuller, “an unofficial total of 14,535 of the city’s 63,152 registered voters, or 23 percent of the registered voters, cast ballots in this Special Election.” ....
