Period poverty is described as “the lack of access to sanitary products, menstrual hygiene education, toilets, hand washing facilities, and, or, waste management.”
A recently released Period Promise Research Project by the United Way Lower Mainland shows that about 25 per cent of people have been affected at some point in time by period poverty. This number is said to fluctuate depending on the part of the world.
The report, which specifically looks into period poverty in British Columbia, details surveys from people who have experienced period poverty and testimonies from people who received menstrual products from United Way.
