Cops, S'gor DOE arrest suspects over dumping of chemicals in Kajang

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The Selangor Department of Environment (DOE) and the police have detained suspects over the illegal dumping of chemical waste at the Sungai Langat reserve area in Taman Seri Reko, Kajang recently.
However, its director-general Norlin Jaafar did not disclose how many were arrested by the authorities on Sunday (Feb 7), saying that the DOE was able to seize a three-tonne lorry believed to have been used in the illegal dumping based on intelligence obtained.
She added that the investigation paper was being completed to bring the suspects to court under Section 34B of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, which carries a mandatory jail sentence, with a possible fine of no more than RM500,000. ....

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 3 ― An investigation paper has been opened under the Environmental Quality Act 1974 into an incident involving the illegal dumping of chemicals at the Sungai Langat reserve area in Taman Seri Reko, Kajang yesterday, says Environment director-general Norlin Jaafar.
She said checks by the Selangor Department of Environment (DOE) at the location yesterday afternoon found that there were 21 barrels containing liquid that smelled like solvents. ....

CYBERJAYA, Feb 3: The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) is investigating the discovery of 19 barrels of scheduled waste at vacant premises near the Sungai Langat in Taman Seri Reko, Kajang, yesterday.
SPAN, in a statement today, said the commission found 13 160-litre barrels and six five-litre barrels which contained solvents that were not properly managed, following information from the Kajang Municipal Council’s (MPKj) Enforcement Division.
“This could potentially cause river pollution,” it said.
The commission said in the event of pollution, the premises owner could be investigated under Section 121 (1) (c) of the Water Services Industry Act 2006, which provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or a one-year jail or both. ....
