开平与“侨”有着怎样的渊源呢？
历史上，海外华侨把台山、开平、恩平和新会四个县统称为“四邑”。
鸦片战争后，四邑本地人和客家人之间发生了持续多年的“土客械斗”。国内战乱频繁、本地天灾人祸再加上与客家人之间的斗争，导致当地的农民生活困苦，于是，很多开平人选择出国谋生，到东南亚、中美洲和北美洲、大洋洲等地从事开采锡矿、金矿和建筑铁路、开荒种植等工作。
在当时，这些身在海外的开平人深受“排华法案”的压迫，但他们却忍辱负重，努力打拼，积累了一笔财富。之后，他们又回到家乡，重建碉楼，安享晚年。
数百年来，开平侨胞为了防洪防匪，保护侨眷安全，兴建居守兼备的碉楼，现存1833座。
这一座座碉楼，从一个世纪跨过另一个世纪，见证了开平侨乡从战乱走向安定，从萧条
